Matt Brooks took over the family business in recent years and glowingly reflects on what that has meant for him and his family. “Owning a local family business is amazing. Not only do I get the sense of pride to keep growing what my parents have built, but I get to hopefully one day pass it along to one of my kids too. At the time when my parents asked if I was interested in getting into the family business, I was working a job where I was doing shift work — 12-hour nights, weekends, holidays, you name it. My wife and I just had our first child too, and the shift-work lifestyle seemed a little harder now. Many other aspects prompted my decision to leave my current job and take a shot at the family business but family life definitely was at the top of that list.” Matt says.
Canadian-Made wall, desk and cabinet beds
While having been in the Ottawa-area for over twenty years, it was in July 2025 that the Westboro Village location opened. The space is welcoming and has parking available for customers who can visit by appointment or walk-in with nothing more than the thought of an idea. The collaborative design process starts by reviewing the needs of the space, planning a design, measurements and finalizing the project for delivery and installation.
The Guest Room offers space-specific cabinet, wall and desk beds depending on your needs. This goes beyond the ‘off the shelf’ approach by working together to utilize the space to its full capacity and potential, with further custom details such as wood colours, hardware design and material coverings.
Canadian-made products have increased in demand, but The Guest Room has long worked with made-in-Canada manufacturers for much of their designs.
Matt has been seeing the demand to update spaces over the years because of work-from-home, maximizing cottage space, updating a bedroom to have guests and more. The Guest Room provides the space solutions from big to small spaces, single people, families and empty nesters.
Why Westboro Village?
Having been in Westboro Village for over a year, Matt says that he loves having everything available in one neighbourhood, a sentiment echoed by many who live and visit the area. “We have a lot of returning customers, and one of the things they all say when they visit our new location in Westboro is that this is the perfect place for us to be. Our new showroom vibe feels more homey and welcoming, and they are 100% right!” He says, and his plans are to remain. “We just moved to our new location here in Westboro about a year ago, and we love it here so I do not expect a change in location for the foreseeable future!”
“One of my favourite things to do in the area is some mornings when it’s nice out I’ll walk up to Equator Coffee and grab a muffin and a coffee and take a walk through the neighbourhood. My days can get pretty busy, so I find it’s a nice relaxing way to start off my day.” Matt added.
The future is spacious and bright for The Guest Room. When looking ahead, Matt hopes to build on existing collaborations that have already begun. “The Guest Room has done some work over the last few years with some developers in the Ottawa area on new condo builds where we focus on the studio unit lifestyle. I would love to keep working with these types of developers and continue to grow the business in that aspect.”
