It’s not about trends for Manhattan West owner Claudine Saulnier, it’s about choosing the right products that she knows her clients will love. While she may lean into the colour-of-the-season, finding quality pieces that fit well while providing exceptional customer service is foundational. That dedication isn’t new; the boutique has been around for over three decades. “People may be surprised to know that we’ve been in business 32 years. We originally opened in the Byward Market on Dalhousie street in 1992.” Claudine shares. Some loyal customers have been shopping with Claudine for over 25 years.
At Home in Westboro
Westboro has been the home to Manhattan West for over 12 years now. “There is a great sense of community here. And I find people are very loyal to supporting businesses in their neighborhood.” Claudine says.
She also shares that Westboro is where she envisions the shop continuing and growing. That will no doubt be welcome news for the many clients who live in Westboro and the Ottawa area. “After being in the Byward Market for 20 years, I really enjoy the “neighborhood” feel of Westboro. Many of our clients live in the area, and I get to see them regularly which I really enjoy. There are also great surrounding businesses that we’ve gotten to love.”

Claudine shares that her clients are typically looking for style and comfort. They may be going to work, retired, or travelling and are usually over 30 years old from Ottawa and Quebec.
She notes that there’s been an increase in shoppers paying attention to fabrics, with clients starting to look more at natural options. She’s listened to her clients and knows how to bring in quality pieces, highly sought-after designer brands including Canadian and European brands, and exclusive items that aren’t found in other places.
This trust goes beyond a label. The desire for an exquisite fit has been an ongoing priority and Claudine works hard to ensure her customers find it at Manhattan West. While something may look nice on a hanger, it could feel uncomfortable. She tries on a lot of items herself to check fit.
When looking ahead, it’s not a surprise that Claudine’s take on the future is client focused: “I hope to keep offering the same level of customer service that we pride ourselves on. Definitely staying put in Westboro and welcoming new clients in who discover us every day.”
