Trio is doing something special this year for Remembrance Day.
This November, Trio Bistro and Lounge will be featuring the artwork of Roland “Roly” Lalonde, a 102-year-old Second World War veteran and resident of Perley Health here in Ottawa. He served with the Royal 22e Régiment (Van Doos) in Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands — and he’s still painting today.
The exhibit runs November 2–16 and is meant as a tribute to Roland and all veterans. While the art pieces are not for purchase, we encourage guests to make donations to The Perley Health Foundation in support of veterans’ care and creative arts programs.
More About Roland “Roly” Lalonde
Second World War Veteran – Royal 22e Régiment (“Van Doos”)
Born July 8, 1923 | Ottawa, Ontario
Roland “Roly” Lalonde enlisted in the Canadian Army on November 5, 1942, at the age of 19, driven by a strong sense of duty to his country. Originally a clerk typist with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, he later joined the Royal 22e Régiment (Van Doos) — a decision that took him from the typewriter to the front lines of the Second World War.
Roly served with distinction in Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, helping to liberate occupied Europe during the final months of the war. His regiment endured heavy fighting and harsh conditions, yet his memories often turn to the moments of humanity amid the chaos — Christmas Mass in Piangipane, meeting the Pope in Rome, and learning Italian over laughter in local bistros.
When the war ended, Roly returned home to a hero’s welcome in Ottawa, greeted by family and friends who carried him on their shoulders through the streets in celebration. He went on to serve two additional five-year terms with the Governor General’s Foot Guards, earning the Canadian Forces Decoration and the rank of Warrant Officer.
Take a look at some of Roland’s work that you may be able to see at Trio in the coming weeks.
