Long before Bookstagram and Booktok, independent bookstores were curating and promoting books for readers to fall in love with and obsess over. At Westboro Books, a passion for reading, authors and community come together.

Owner Shilhav Mayo opened the store in October 2023, and from its inception Westboro Books was created with community in mind. The easy-to-navigate space with benches for seating and open areas for gatherings are thoughtfully laid out. Friendly staff at the check-out by the entrance welcome you to the space when you first step in.

What can you find at Westboro Books?

Westboro Books offers fiction and non-fiction for all ages. You’ll find popular best-sellers, recipe books, children’s books and Mayo says some of the most popular categories are currently history, sci-fi, psychology and fantasy. You’ll find some of the latest hits and trending books shared online, but they aren’t the primary focus.  A significant emphasis on local authors shouldn’t surprise those who live in the area.

In addition, unique gifts and surprises can be sourced for people of all ages and interests on your gift giving list including a large selection of family-friendly board games.

Finally, a local Ottawa bookstore in Westboro

A local book shop was something many residents wanted for a long time. And Mayo chose the village for a reason.

“Westboro was chosen as the location for the bookstore due to its family-oriented neighborhood with avid readers and book lovers. The community values connection, inclusivity, and supporting local businesses, making it the perfect fit for Westboro Books’ vision of creating a welcoming space for readers of all ages. The neighborhood’s vibrant local scene and strong sense of community align closely with the values of Westboro Books, making it an ideal location to establish our bookstore.”

A Community space for workshops, author signings and special events

From the beginning, Mayo wanted this to be a gathering place for the community. Writing workshops have been popular. Middle-aged writers, teens and adults can sign up to learn about writing.

Many author events are hosted at Westboro Books too. The community can even rent out the space for special events like a craft night or seminar.

Plus, there are two bookclubs to choose from (registration required): WorldLit and CanLit. These meetings are in-person and held once a month.

Local, independent vs Big-Box: It’s all about the passion

This community-first, inclusive and inviting approach stands out compared to large box stores with specific support for small publishers and an emphasis on unique finds. The store has a large offering of poetry books and Mayo has a passion for translated pieces.

“Translated books serve multiple important functions within the literary world” she says. “Firstly, they introduce lesser-known authors from around the globe to readers, providing a platform for diverse voices and perspectives to be heard and appreciated. Additionally, they support foreign authors by expanding their reach to new audiences and cultures, fostering cultural exchange and understanding.” She adds that these translations often support small publishers which leads to “contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive literary landscape overall.”

Book Lovers connect at Westboro Books

It’s no surprise that one of the favourite things Mayo loves about the business is the opportunity to connect with other book lovers. “Whether it’s recommending a hidden gem or hosting a community event, I love being able to share my passion for literature with others and foster a love of reading within the community”.

Westboro Books is establishing itself as a community hub, welcoming all to visit and discover a new favourite read or make a connection.
