St. Patrick’s Day and The Pubs of Westboro
There aren’t too many neighbourhoods where you can plan a good ol’ fashioned pub crawl. Westboro features four great pub destinations within walking distance where you can have the full St Paddy’s Day experience this March 17th… or enjoy any time of the year, quite frankly.
Take a look:
Whispers Pub (249 Richmond Rd)
The grand-daddy of all Westboro watering holes, its hard to find someone in Ottawa that hasn’t made (or forgotten) a memory in Whispers Pub. Owned and operated by husband and wife Paul & Tracy Williams for the past two years, St Paddy’s Day 2018 promises to be one to remember! In addition to good company, cheer, and green beer Whispers will be raising money in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada through the sales of their “Buck for Luck” shamrocks. They’re opening their doors at 11am, the Irish band “The Fake McCoys” take the stage from 12 noon until 12 am, and they’ll be serving Irish Stew (obviously!)
Whispers features a private area upstairs for event booking, and 3 patios – one of which is a rooftop patio…which may or may not be open for St. Paddy’s Day, but will be a great spot once spring comes (finally, please!).
Barley Mow (399 Richmond Rd)
The Barley Mow is ready for a full on St Patrick’s Day experience, they’ve been counting down since February 15th! With three bands on deck, a full St Patrick’s Day menu, and the promise of plenty of prizes and give-aways, you’re in for a great time! Come for breakfast from 10 AM – 12 PM, or have a proper Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage while you enjoy the bands Werth It (12PM – 4 PM), Drive-In Radio featuring Stuart the Fiddler (4:30 PM – 8:30 PM), and Westpark from 9 PM until…some time on the 18th .
Barley Mow also boasts a private room in their lower level for bookings, and has a rooftop patio as well, to enjoy bevvies on a beautiful afternoon or evening in Westboro.
Clocktower (418 Richmond Rd)
The Clocktower promises live music, craft beers, and standing room only after they open their doors at 11:30am on St. Patrick’s Day. What they don’t do, is green beer. The brew masters who craft Clocktowers’ proprietary beers, locally, won’t have it: “22 years and no green beers!” quotes Westboro Clocktower’s GM Jason Wilkinson. Irish band Paddy’s Hangover will be playing, and no cover between 5pm and 10pm! Erin go Bragh! The Clocktower has two private areas for parties, and a large street side patio.
Churchills (356 Richmond Rd)
If you are looking for a great date night, or a place to take your family, Churchill’s offers a more intimate setting with its roomy booths, and intimate vintage lighting. Make no mistake, this pub will be packed on St. Patrick’s Day, but the live bands music will be replaced by the vibe of people enjoying each other’s company via lots of chat-time! Owned and operated by Brenda and Walid Freije (who also owned Milagro in Westboro), Churchills is a family affair (their children work there, too!). It boasts domestic craft beers on tap, along with amazing cocktails led by local favourite “Churchill’s Colossal Caesar” garnished with pickled vegetables and beef jerky made IN-HOUSE.
On St. Paddy’s Day, Churchill’s will be opening their doors at 11:30 AM – 1 AM, and will add Guiness Stew to the menu! You can enter to win a Guiness BBQ smoker.
They also have a roof-top patio that feels just like home, opening soon we hope – Bring on the Spring! And speaking of patios… yes, Westboro has quite a few of those. Another feature, coming soon.
Happy pub crawling!
