Westboro Village patio pairings, part one

It feels like we’re teetering on the edge of the longest winter and spring on record but summer is coming. It has to!

We’ve waited so long that we’ve had time to do some reconnaissance and formulate a game plan in time for patio weather. So without further ado, we are sharing a list of great patios in Westboro AND pairing each one with an adult beverage.

The Clocktower Brew Pub

The Clocktower (418 Richmond Rd.) is famous for its generously-sized patio. At ~100 seats, it’s the largest in Westboro. Patio heaters extend the season and give us a bit of warmth on chilly evenings and large adjustable umbrellas provide welcome shade on the hottest days. (Which are coming, we promise.) The Clocktower’s patio is dog-friendly! Your best canine friend can be tied to the perimeter fencing or, if your pooch is well-behaved, lie quietly under your table. Our perfect pairing suggestion: any of the Clocktower’s seasonal brews. New ones are always being introduced! Also, ask them about their new happy hour and late night deals while you’re there.

Barley Mow

If you haven’t been to the Barley Mow (399 Richmond Rd.) rooftop patio yet, DO IT. It’s a surprisingly tranquil oasis in the city. It seats 60, and tends to be warmer up there than on the street because the space is protected from the wind. It might be a tad early to think about summer heat waves but we’re already looking forward to keeping cool in the company of our BFF and Barley Mow’s patio misting machine (YES, FOR REAL.) Manager Kaylie Taylor recommends their “Somers Sangria” as their perfect patio pairing, it contains Absolut vodka, peach schnapps, red wine, Somersby cider, and soda. She also recommends the “Bucket Special” (5 for $25). You can mix n’ match Corona, Palm Bay cherry, lime, or grapefruit coolers.  Sounds like heaven, Kaylie. We are definitely taking you up on that!

Churchills (356 Richmond Rd.) is quite possibly the prettiest pub patio in Westboro. Here’s the thing, it’s not quite open yet. Manager Brenda Freije says they’re watching the weather. Once word comes down though, watch out. This patio seats 48 and fills up fast. Regulars might notice a few changes, such as new lighting, but the great view of Richmond Road remains the same. Our perfect patio pairing suggestion is their premium Margarita: Casamigos Tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, simple syrup, and a salted rim. Warning: Summer sipping may never be the same!

Little known fact: Whispers (249 Richmond Rd.) boasts the most patios in Westboro. There are two on street level and one on the roof. The rooftop patio is relatively new as it opened in 2016. All in, they seat about 80 people and when the weather is good it’s positively jumping. There is one other detail that sets Whispers apart from the other patios: one of them is closed off with a play area at the far end. It’s ideal for young kids who are happy to entertain themselves while mom and dad sit at a table nearby. Protip: if you want a table here you should book ahead. Fridays tend to fill up fast. (Ask for a table in “playland” when making your reservation. They’ll know what you mean.)

Owner Paul Williams has a great suggestion for the perfect patio pairing: Beau’s Lug Tread. (We’re not sure if we’re allowed to spill the beans but this beer is his personal fave.) Beaus “goes great with nachos and chicken wings,” he says, and he is not wrong.

Soaking up the sunshine and taking in the fresh air on a patio is one of the best ways to enjoy life in Westboro. Come on summer!
