Patti Normand’s Canadian Gothic at Wall Space Gallery

WALL SPACE Gallery welcomes Ottawa-based artist Patti Normand for her solo exhibition, Canadian Gothic. This will be Normand’s first showcase of her dioramas and photographs together.

“On the surface the miniature worlds I create seem safe, but look closer and it becomes apparent all is not as it seems.” – Patti Normand

Photograph of one of Patti Normand's dioramas At first glance, Patti Normand’s intricate dioramas and photographic explorations seem like depictions of everyday scenes. Upon further study, Normand’s scenes create an unsettling atmosphere of darkness and evoke themes such as the uncanny, strange, absurd, humorous and overwhelming vastness of the Canadian wilderness. Normand’s photographs offer a deeper understanding of her dioramas and encourage viewers to question scale, perception and what is real.  Each piece occupies the blurred space between familiar and unfamiliar.

Patti Normand is a Canadian artist based in Ottawa, Ontario. Her dioramas are built using a variety of materials, including HO scale elements and the artist’s own backdrops. Normand is a graduate of OCAD University and has recently received a City of Ottawa project grant for her upcoming 2017 body of work.
